A Brief History of Rex Raptor

Only One Morally Clean Person in Duelist Kingdom

derping around with 4c omnath in edh

yeah i call it edh and not commander. i'm old, get used to it.

anyway i've been playing 4c omnath in edh since release. never made it cedh though. always durdly bullshit. ask my friends. they've seen me take 10-20 minute turns just playing land after land after land.

tbh it should be kenrith instead so i can jam bojuka bog, coffers, and urborg but i'm not abandoning my boy omnath. also omnath's life gain often acts as a stabilizer so it's not like he's useless.

the deck basically does nothing and then it does everything. makes sense, right? but then:

dryad of illysian grove, valakut, scapeshift
ruin crab, scapeshift
hedron scrab, scapeshift
avenger of zendikar, scapeshift
omnath locus of rage, scapeshift
felidar retreat, scapeshift

co-starrring:
aesi, tyrant of the gyre strait
horn of greed
ancient greenwarden
valakut exploration
grazing gladehart

all these cards are fine enough on their own but when i'm allowed make their powers combined they become captain landfall. then of course i have extra land drop cards:

dryad
oracle of mul daya
sakura tribe scout
exploration
mina and denn
azusa
aesi

those can then combine with crucible and ancient greenwarden to bring back fetchlands from the yard. or even wasteland if i want to be a dick.

obviously there's the normal ramp spells like rampant growth, cultivate, explosive vegetation, etc. also dark depths and thespian's stage. a recurring marit lage is pretty dope. once i had someone manage to remove it like six turns in a row but it just kept coming back.

being that i'm turbo broke these days and had to sell the original it's now almost all proxied. proxies being normalized in casual edh is great. no more arrogant "I pAiD mOnEy HuRr DuRr" bullshit. these are my custom ones and the best marit lage token i could find:

i made the six duals and bought the force of will off facebook. yamata dragon was in my old yugioh collection and i couldn't resist.

other misc things in the deck are:

mystical/enlightened/worldly tutors
amulet of vigor
viridian corruptor
rec sage
genesis ultimatum
negate
dispel
e witness
k grip
treasure cruise
thrashing brontodon
tranquility

the deck isn't cedh by any means but once it hits critical mass feel free to get up and go take a shit because i'm gonna be a while.

ps: ruin crab is so infamous in my group it just dies when it hits the field.

monastery swiftspear banned in pauper

i haven't played pauper in a while so i might be talking out of my ass here. swiftspear doesn't seem that broken of a card. it's good. like really really good. but it never felt ban worthy to me.

gavin's logic for the ban vs not banning other things feels faulty to me. he said bushwhacker/rebirth was fine because it's been part of pauper for so long. that's the same logic people use to keep brainstorm in legacy. it was bad logic then and it's bad logic now. on top of that he mentioned double tolarian terror on turn three which is somehow fine? i don't get it. feels inconsistent to me.

the worst thing is according to his data rdw isn't even that good. it's highly favored in g1 of most matches but just dies g2/g3. he said something to the effect of decks having to dedicate eight sideboard slots to rdw which i agree would be pretty bad for the health of pauper. i skimmed mtggoldfish and found decks having like four slots to it. then again i skimmed and he has more data than me so maybe i just wasn't seeing enough lists.

in the end i think the ban is stupid but i'm also biased. i've been a red player for 20 years. seeing red get nerfed but blue of all colors getting a pass seems like a kick in the dick. white getting to keep all that glitters is fine to me because white aggro has also gotten the short end of the stick for a long time.

who knows? like i said i might be talking out my ass here. find out next time on dragon ball z.

mtg arena's new joke format: timeless

wizards just announced another new format on arena as if we don't have enough already. seriously we have:

standard
explorer
historic
standard brawl
historic brawl
draft
sealed

anyway this new format is called timeless and is basically arena vintage. it allows all cards ever put on arena and uses the pre errata versions of paper cards like omnath. here's a list of all the currently banned cards on arena that will be legal to use:

agent of treachery
blood moon
brainstorm
channel
counterspell
dark ritual
demonic tutor
field of the dead
intruder alarm
land tax
lightning bolt
memory lapse
mishra's bauble
natural order
necropotence
nexus of fate
oko thief of crowns
once upon a time
ragavan nimble pilferer
sneak attack
spreading seas
swords to plowshares
thassa's oracle
tibalt's trickery
time warp
uro titan of nature's wrath
veil of summer
wilderness reclamation

on launch demonic tutor, channel, and tibalt's trickery will be restricted to one.

this format is going to be busted. out the gates we have:

channel + banefire
intruder alarm + fable of the mirror breaker + mana dork
sneak attack + pick your poison
natural order + pick your poison
nexus of fate
dark ritual + necropotence
brainstorm + fetchlands

you read that last one right. fetchlands. khans of tarkir comes to arena on dec 12 just like timeless. this format is going to be a beautiful disaster. there's going to be bo1 and bo3 ranked. on feb 2 there's going to be a metagame challenge.

i don't really know what to think about it. guess i don't really have an opinion since i'm priced out anyway. my tinfoil hat senses say this is wizards trying to get people to burn wildcards. guess we'll see what happens.
